Summer of Sustainability 2024: Looking Back

This post provides a summary of two of the recorded sessions that are available from OCASA’s Summer of Sustainability 2024. If you like the sound of either of them please visit the Arts, the Environment and Sustainability resource area on the VLE to view the full videos and associated Padlets. They can be found in this section OCASA's Summer of Sustainability 2024.

There are also the previous year’s recordings and Padlets available in OCASA's Summer of Sustainability 2023

Andrea Norrington's bookmaking session from SoS 2024

There is a full video of Andrea's bookmaking session from Summer of Sustainability 2024. It's 3 hours long and you can make 2 different books along with Andrea and stop and restart the video as you wish.

Andrea also created a brilliant Padlet with additional mini video instructions and other resources. It also contains the information, resources and video from Andrea’s 2023 bookmaking session where she covered a pamphlet book and a map fold concertina book.If you are interested in finding out more about bookmaking, and reusing materials, this is the place to start.

Firstly Andrea covers some health and safety points and then she shows you how to make a folded pocket book. She talks about making them from different sized pieces of paper. Andrea then introduces the petal folded book structure. She shows different ways of folding depending on the paper shape, orientation and size. After this there is a built in break and you can leave your books to press flat and grab a cuppa.

After the break Andrea moves on to the covers for the 2 structures. She shows simple covers and more complex ones and she also discusses the use of simple everyday materials such as cardboard boxes.

If you gather together the materials she refers to on the Padlet then you can easily make the books whilst watching the video. This is a really enjoyable and productive way to spend 3 hours and you will end up with a series of small book structures.

Gill German's The Sustainable Site lecture from SoS 2024

There is a full video of Gill’s lecture from Summer of Sustainability 2024. It’s about an hour long and includes an activity that you might also wish to undertake. Gill’s lecture takes a comprehensive look at aspects relating to projects that could incorporate a more sustainable approach to site. This will be of interest to garden designers, landscape architects, sculptors, land artists or those creating externally placed installations.

The lecture includes an introduction, a series of slides, an explanation of the extensive accompanying Padlet and the setting of an optional task. A number of fascinating examples are discussed and this leads to sections on assessing the site, ecosystem services, guiding principles and guidelines.

In the ecosystem services section areas such as habitat, soil and the impact of construction are covered.

In the guiding principles of a sustainable site section aspects such as “do no harm” and “be cautious” are explored along with ethics, collaboration, stewardship and the benefits of nature.

In the sustainable design guidelines section energy use, products and materials, soil and vegetation, water, human health and wellbeing and then finally education and learning are explored. This in-depth section covers the many relevant areas to consider before undertaking any externally sited project.

After a quick look at the Padlet Gill then introduces a drawing task. You can still undertake this and put into practice some of the areas you have found relevant from the lecture. You can use one of Gill’s images of a site or use one of your own.
